Haiti Outreach

The WIDI team is dedicated to education and has recently joined forces with Dr Jennifer Nicholas, Assistant Professor at Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology/Washington University in St Louis, to bring WIDI SIM to a group of Haitian radiology residents with limited educational resources at L’Hopital de I’Universite d’Etat d’Haiti (HUEH) in Port-au-Prince. This group of future radiologists represents the only radiology residency program in Haiti.

Dr Nicholas’ work with HUEH is prolific and steadfast. She has made repeated trips to Haiti, hosted several Haitian radiology residents in her home, and is steadily developing a platform for long-distance interactive learning. With support from a 2017 RSNA Education Scholar Grant, Dr Nicholas purchased tablet computers and loaded them with textbooks, presentations, articles, videos, and a library of cases for each of the radiology residents.

Upon learning about WIDI SIM at the 2018 AUR Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida, Dr Nicholas collaborated with WIDI SIM Director, Dr Dhana Rajderkar, to incorporate simulation into the mix. Dr Rajderkar previously worked at Mallinckrodt and was eager to provide support.

Due to the limited modalities currently available to the group at HUEH, a tailored sim was created that focuses on plain film and USG skills. Dr Nicholas donated the necessary hardware to run the sim and the WIDI SIM team will be providing the sim at no charge. The HUEH radiology residents are scheduled to take the sim in the coming months.

The WIDI team looks forward to working with Dr Nicholas and the radiology residents at HUEH!
